Today’s success track is about understanding HOW to make advances in your business and your life.
In my line of work, every month many people share with me about wanting to make improvements in their business and their lives, yet unfortunately, most don’t get it done. I’d like to share with you why, and of course HOW you can get the results you are looking for.
For the sake of this example, let’s just say you are in sales and you want to increase your sales performance. There are two ways to increase your sales production:
#1 Increase your prospecting or #2 Increase your skill set.
#1 is the easier of the two… it’s simple, just go out and prospect more. Even if you are a non-skilled sales professional, you will make more sales by making more prospecting calls. It’s really a short-sited solution. You are working harder, yet your skill set is the same.
What we really want is to improve our skill set. Most people don’t do this… and here’s why:
People don’t improve their selling skills because they don’t train. They might read an article on building value by asking better questions, yet they are not training. Training means getting reps… it means practicing.
Many sales people attend a seminar or read a book, or even attend a company sales training event, yet if there is no consistent training, the learning does not take place.
We learn by doing, and by doing it again and again.
Think about it, you don’t get great at golf by reading golf digest or watching the golf channel. You need instruction, then practice… you need to do it. You need reps. Although the skills are from selling to golf are very different, the learning process remains the same. It’s about getting reps… it’s about training.
In selling there are multiple skills we must have to be a high level sales professional. We must know how to connect with the customer… yet, this is a skill. We need to know how to build value, because amateurs sell price and Pros sell value.
You need the skills to present your product and the skills to align with your prospect when they have a question or a concern.
How about closing? Well, as a sales expert, I’m here to tell you if you haven’t don’t a great job of creating connection and building value, you are not going to close.
Selling takes skills and skills take practice.
