How Are You Presenting You?

Today’s blog post is about presentation skills and how vitale they are in you achieving success in both business and in life.

Now before we go any further, please let me clarity that I’m not talking about being a motivational speaker or a professional speaker.  I’m talking about your ability to communicate your ideas in a way that is effective and impactful.

No matter what you do for a living, we all have circumstances where we need to communicate with, and influence others in a group situation.  You could be in sales, you could be in management or could be the leader of an organization.   You could be the leader of a soccer club or even a little league coach.  The bottom line is, how you present your ideas will impact your results.

Now, if you are a CEO, an executive, or anyone in a leadership role in a corporation, presentation skills are paramount; and the lack of those skills will literally place a ceiling on your career.

I’ve been blessed to be able to make a living, speaking to companies all over the world about success, and with that being said, I am passionate about helping others increase their effectiveness at conveying their ideas in a public forum.

So today I’m going to give you a few quick tips, and I have a gift for you.

First of all, let’s address the mental aspect of giving a talk in public. Here’s a general rule to follow: when people meet, the person who is most certain, always influences the other person or the other people.  How does that relate to you speaking in public?  When you walk in front of the room and start your talk, it’s natural for people to judge you.  Why? Because that’s what human’s do.  With that in mind, you must start off your talk exuding confidence and certainty – and you can do that in the following ways:

1. Walk and Stand Strong  (expanded upon in video)

2. Speak Clearly

3. Look at your audience – Eye Contact

Now, moving forward with a couple more tips:  you must have an agenda, which means you have specific points you are going to hit.  There’s nothing worse than listing to someone who is rambling from subject to subject, and just can’t seem to finish a point.  Get clear on what you’re going to talk about.

Lastly, close your meeting or your talk with an action step.  What I mean by that is, what do you want them to do?  Before you start your talk, you must ask yourself the following question:  What’s my outcome?  What do I want them to do?

Once you know your outcome, you can formulate your talk and make certain that when you complete your message, your audience knows what you want them to do.

You can use these simple ideas whether you are talking to an executive or sales team, or you’re talking to your kids.

There’s only so much I can share in this short video format, yet if you take these 5 ideas and run, you will show improvement.  For those of you who have the desire to learn more, I have a gift for you.

Just look at the navigation bar above and select 3 Free Speaking Tips. Enter your name and e-mail address and I’ll send you 3 videos that will really help you make some progress.  No obligation.

Start today being conscious about how you present yourself to others.  Implement the 5 simple tips, and you’ll notice the difference.

Let’s go out and have an amazing month.

Don’t Get Fooled by the Spectacular – Consistency is the Key

Dan Lier, Most requested Las Vegas Motivational Speaker

This month’s success track is about Consistency, and how consistency can dramatically change your results.

What I’ve seen in my travels around the world, is that consistency is one of the fundamentals for success in anything in life. And I do mean anything. You could be a sales rep, an executive, or maybe you’re a parent or a college student. Consistency is a key to your success.

I’ll give you an example; when companies hire me to perform a motivational talk for their national meeting or corporate event, often times I’ll then get hired afterwards as a consultant to focus on increasing productivity.

At that point, I’ll go “in-house” so to speak, and start refining the sales process and changing the psychology. When people realize it’s time to raise the bar, I’ll often times hear people say something to this effect: “Ok, that’s it, I’m really going to make it happen now. I’m going to make 100 calls a day and crush my quota.”

That’s a typical response and great way to think. I love people who are fired up. Yet, because I’m an expert in human behavior, I know that even with the BEST intentions, they are not going to do 100 calls a day with consistency.

Why?

Because things happen. An emergency with one of your best clients, personal issues, one of your kids is sick – things just happen. The problem with setting yourself up for massive activity, such as 100 calls a day, is that you’ve set yourself up for failure. Once you miss your goal a few times, your mind just stops feeling like you can do it. The natural human behavior is to stop. We lose our steam.

I Teach Consistency

The person I referred to earlier who said he was going to make 100 calls per day
was Mark, and I said, “Mark, I love your passion and intent, and I’d like you do consider a different approach. Rather than 100 call per day, can you do 10 solid calls per day no matter what? Mark said, 10 calls??? Of course. He said to me… “10 calls is nothing.”

Well to make a long story short, the math is simple. When you are consistent in making 10 new prospecting calls per day, you’ve made 50 per week and 200 per month, which comes out to 2,400 new prospecting calls per year.

The challenge for most people is coming out of the gate at 100mph, yet not being able to sustain that activity level for any period of time.

Remember the tortoise and the hare?

I asked Mark how many calls he had made over the last quarter and he estimated at about 300. The fact is he really didn’t know. Consistency will change the game for you.

You can apply the same Law of Consistency to your fitness, your eating habits or even preparing for a big meeting or presentation.

Being consistent does 3 things for you:

1. It sets you up for success psychologically.

When you set an activity goal that is actually achievable, you feel confident and look forward to doing it. In addition, you develop positive success habits. When you have an activity goal that may be too aggressive, you don’t look forward to doing itand as a result, often times don‘t.

2. It builds your confidence and self-esteem.

When you are consistent and moving toward your goal, you feel better; you feel confident and that confidence shows in all areas of your life.

3. You get results… and that’s the key.

&

So how about you? Can you change your thought process to be consistent rather than inconsistent or erratic? You know, up one day and down the next? Take a look one of your goals for this year and apply the Law of Consistency. Trust me, I know you’ll like the results.

Great job today. Remember, YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN

The Only Disability in Life is a Bad Attitude

Ravens Fan’s E-Mail Inspires Team

The Ravens had finished last Thursday’s practice in preparation for the game against the Giants.

John Harbaugh returned to his office, and before watching the video of the just completed practice, he checked his phone and e-mails.

“I saw Pam (Lund, the executive assistant to owner Steve Bisciotti) had forwarded an e-mail to me from a fan. Pam’s very good about what she sends me. They are usually from an old friend reaching out or someone delivering a message that I might find interesting,” Coach Harbaugh said.

“This one stopped me. Really, it made me pause. It came from a fan, and it got me. I immediately decided to share it with the team and e-mailed it to them,” the head coach continued.

Here’s the e-mail sent by Matthew Jeffers, a Ravens fan who is a senior at Towson University:

The Message

“To Whom It May Concern,

“My name is Matthew Jeffers. I am a senior at Towson University majoring in acting, and I have been a die-hard Ravens fan since Baltimore welcomed you with open arms in 1996. As you, the Ravens, continue to battle through tough losses and heated criticism, allow me to share some thoughts with you. You are in uncharted territory. You (and us) have had the gift and pleasure of consistently winning for years, and frankly, you have spoiled us. You have maintained a level of professionalism and inspiring play for so long that we have lost touch with what it feels like to have our feet in the mud. And I’m sure it is an even worse feeling for you, the ones on the field, than it is for the ones in the stands.

“And let me let you in on a little secret. Life doesn’t care about streaks. It does not care about three-game losing streaks, or four-game win streaks. It does not care if you WANT to win, if you NEED to win. At the end of the day, life is simply unfair. I am short-statured. I am 21 years old, but stand only at 4’2”. Over my lifetime I have endured 20 surgeries, some small, others life-threatening. I have had a tracheotomy, I have had blood transfusions, I have spent summers in a hip spica cast, and I’ve had to learn how to walk again. My last surgery was in 2003, and I acquired the naive mindset that I was free from the bondage of heartache. I had the mindset that I had ‘done my time.’ And then, in February of 2011, my mother was diagnosed with a stage IV brain tumor. As I write this, the doctors at JHU are determining whether or not the next step should be Hospice care. So you tell me, is life fair? When you give every ounce you have, and all you have to show for it is a loss in overtime, is that fair? When families in Newtown, CT go into their child’s room, but have no child to kiss goodnight, is that fair?

We live in a painful world, no doubt about it. But let me tell you this: The ONLY disability in life is a bad attitude. The ONLY disability in life…………is a bad attitude. A positive attitude is the most powerful combatant to life’s misfortune. The will to fight, to survive, to win. It is the secret weapon I use, and I think I’m turning out OK. When you play on Sunday, let it not be to win a division or to silence the critics or prove somebody wrong or end a losing skid. Let it be a dedication to that simple yet powerful notion that life can be conquered with the right outlook. And I promise you, I promise you that everything else will take care of itself. Go get ‘em on Sunday. I wish you all the best on your journey to The Lombardi.”

Get “On The Court” in Business and Your Life

This Month’s Success track is about creating impact in your business and your life by getting “ON THE COURT” rather than being “in the bleachers.”

If you’re not a sports fan, bear with me here, as this message is not about sports.  I’m simply utilizing sports as a metaphor for our business and our life.

Because I live here in Las Vegas, let’s say you and I walked into a UNLV Rebel basketball game at the Thomas and Mack Center.  What would we hear?

We would hear the crowd, the band, the shoes squeaking and the oohs and aahs following a good or bad play.

To our left is a guy that’s yelling at the referee (C’mon blow your whistle; That’s a terrible call, etc), and he’s also yelling at the players (C’mon, shoot the ball; Get Your Head in the game, etc).  My question is this; does the guy’s talking up “in the bleachers” impact the game?  Of course not.  Contrary to what he thinks, no one cares about his comments, nor to they impact the game at all.  He has no impact on the outcome basketball game.

Now here’s my question:  If we were to go down and sit on the floor seats, what would we hear down there?

We would hear more of the same; the squeaking of the shoes, the whistle of the referee, the band, and of course we would hear talking on the court.  The players are talking to other players.  The coaches are talking to players; and the coaches are talking to the referees.

Here’s the difference; the talking on the court by those participating in the game CAN actually impact the game.  A coach talking to the referee, a coach talking to his players or a player talking to another player can have an effect on the outcome of the game.

The distinction that I want to bring to your attention is that we all know someone who is talking about how things should change at work, in their office, at home or even in their relationship, yet they are metaphorically “sitting in the bleachers” having no impact on the situation.  They have no impact on outcome of their own game.

If you want to make changes, in your business or your life, you must get out of the bleachers and “get on the court!”

Many people are in the bleachers in their business or their life, wishing things would turn around or improve, and yet they are like they guy at the basketball game yelling at the players or the referee.  They have no impact on the game.

The other distinction is that the guy in the bleachers has no risk.  He has nothing at stake or nothing on the Line. It’s all talk. It’s easy to yell from the bleachers and not be accountable or have to make changes or improvements.  Yet the players, coaches and referees on the court are at risk.  They have something on the line, because in the game you can be a winner or a loser, the hero or the goat.  The same goes for you and me.  When we get “on the court” and play, meaning get “on the court” in our business, our life, as a parent or in our relationships, that’s when we can have an impact.

Here’s the good news.  You can change it today.  We can make a decision right now to get down out of the bleachers and get onto the court and actually impact our results.

So make the decision today, to get out of the bleachers and get down on the court and have an impact on the game.

Why America Needs Stuart Scott

Stuart Scott

I’ve always liked Stuart Scott.  I like his style.  I like his swag, and I like the way he’s influenced the world of sportscasting.  Like millions of others, I’ve never met him in person, yet he’s lived in my home for the past 20 years.  There was a time when I tuned into SportsCenter just to hear him put his personal stamp on the highlights.

A few days ago @StuartScott recognized Lance Armstrong in a recent tweet:

His recent Tweet:

Day after chemo.. Lil fatigued..Lil queasy..fight thru it. Daughters still gotta be taken to soccer practice & dance rehearsal! #LIVESTRONG

It bothers me that he signed-off with the hashtag #LiveStrong.

I don’t have a personal vendetta against Lance.  I don’t have a personal vendetta against Bernie Madoff either, yet they are two men who gained their fortune and created opportunities for themselves by doing things the wrong way and ruining the lives of others.

Lance is not someone who needs to be recognized for something he cheated for the opportunity to do.

Here’s what I mean…

Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer on Oct 2, 1996.  What I do respect about Lance is that he fought, battled and overcame the deadly disease, which takes a winning mindset and incredible determination as well as mental toughness.  Lance has that certain mindset that allowed him to stay strong during his fight… and fortunately, he won his battle.

What I don’t respect is Lance Armstrong’s behavior after he beat cancer.  In a word, CHARACTER.  The lying, the cheating and the arrogance.  LANCE ARMSTRONG’S ENTIRE BRAND WAS BUILT ON A LIE. The fact is, if Lance didn’t win the Tour de France, he wouldn’t have had the “stage” and the influence to write the book.  Lance who?

Cancer Patient Fighting the Fight

Many people right here in the U.S. overcome cancer every year.  These heroes have fought the same fight, with the will and desire that Lance showed, yet no book publisher is knocking on their door.  Those incredible survivors can only share their story with those who are going through the same thing on a much smaller scale.

Lance made millions of dollars on a lie, or should I say a long series of lies.   He suckered the USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) and he suckered us.  When he lost his sponsors (his income), he called Oprah to attempt to salvage his brand. Unfortunately for Lance, people recognized who he really was on the 2-day fundraiser for Oprah. The interview was soft, yet he still couldn’t show any signs of a man who is in touch with the scope of his actions.

Stuart Scott said that Lance’s book helped him through his previous battle against cancer, and I’ve heard similar sentiment from others, and I respect that.  Lance’s book helped Stuart and many others get through that tough time, and that will always be.

I was talking to a client of mine about this subject and fact that Stuart Scott’s hashtag shout-out to Lance bothered me.  I wanted to talk through it.  Maybe I was stuck on a meaningless issue. Here’s what he said to me, he said, “Dan, what if 10 years ago, you read a book written by Bernie Madoff, and the book helped you psychologically overcome some issues you were having with money.  It helped you understand the psychology of wealth and gave you hope.  Yet 10 years later Bernie is busted for scamming thousands of people for BILLIONS of dollars and ruining their lives.  Would you stand by him and support him via twitter or other social media?”

Today Stuart Scott is publically battling cancer, and he is a role model.  He IS the “brand of inspiration” for today.   Millions of sports fans around the world know Stuart Scott and are pulling for him.

Stuart changed the “the game” in the world of sports reporting.  As an ex-college basketball player and college basketball coach, I vividly remember Stuart’s first day on-air.  He was a little rough, yet he quickly built his confidence and his personality soon began to show.  He added a certain “flavor” to SportsCenter and in a short period of time, was the best in his craft.

So why am I bothered that Stuart Scott gave a hashtage shout-out to Lance?

Here’s why:

Stuart, you are the celebrity spokesperson.  Not because you want to be, it’s because you are.  You’ve been in our homes for 20 years and we trust you.  We are pulling for you, we are praying for you and NOW you can reach others who need you, just like you needed lance back in 2007.  You are the 2013 version of LiveStrong, yet a truthful version.  An updated version with character and soul.

How about #STUARTSTRONG

How about #SCOTTSTRONG

How about #STUARTSCOTTSTRONG

Either way Stuart, I’m with you.  I still dig your style, your flavor, yet most of all, your character… AND thousands of people need YOU right now.

I’m just sayin’

Dan Lier

Success Habits

Today’s success track is about creating habits that will propel you towards creating the results you want in your business and your life. I call them Success Habits. It’s a great time to talk about creating success habits, because NOW is the time to get things started and going in the right direction.

Years ago I was told a simple message. A message that I took to heart and I live by to this day, and it goes like this -  You make your habits or your habits make you. I’m going to repeat that, you make your habits, or your habits make you.

I love that message, and I live it, and I’m sharing it with you because it’s made an incredible difference in my life, and the lives many of other people that I’ve shared this principle with.

Here’s what I mean. We’ve all heard the phrase that we are creatures of habit. Well, habits are really nothing more than patterns of behavior, and throughout life, all of our patterns of behavior were created by no one other than ourselves.
Many people I speak to around the country at my speaking events or as an executive coach, share with me that they don’t have time to do certain things they would like to do.  Whether that’s learning a new language or learning a new skill, or even learning more about how to use their computer or smart phone. Yet if I were to ask them to break-down their day from start to finish… there is ALWAYS time that we have buried in our patterns of behavior that we can change.

I’ll give you an example of a pattern very near and dear to me. This year, I’m committed to writing my 3rd book.   Although I consider myself a very busy guy, and very productive as well, if I’m going to write this 3rd book, I must produce those results along with doing the other things that I’m already doing.  The only way to do that is by changing my current patterns of behavior and creating new, more productive habits.

What I mean is, I could have written the book last year, but I didn’t. So what’s going to change this year? Am I going to be less busy? No, that’s not it… I have to change my habits.

As I was coursing out my new year, I started really breaking down my patterns of behavior. Here’s what i did: I often turned on the TV around 10 or 10:30 at night, watched some SportsCenter, and the local news would follow.  A late night talk show would start, and I would go to sleep around midnight. When I looked at the pattern, I was burning at least an hour and a half per night, which based on a 5 day week is 7.5 hours a week. Wow, 7.5 hours per week… that’s a lot of time. That’s 30 hours a Month!

I made the decision to create a new habit by changing my behavior. Now
on Sunday through Thursday evenings, I read and write starting around 10pm and make progress on my book. I reward myself by watching TV at night on Friday and Saturday nights if I’m home.

Now that may sound a bit structured, or even boring for some, yet I’ve been around many high-achievers and great leaders over the years and I know that to produce extraordinary results, you must do things differently. You must do things that others won’t do. Successful people will do what the others just won’t.

I had a conversation I had with Dick Vitale about
his success patterns in preparation to giving a keynote or motivational talk, and he said “I don’t have to apologize for being successful; I don’t have to apologize for being prepared, that’s what a professional does.”

So what are some patterns of behavior you would like to change? How about being late, being unorganized or watching TV?  It could be what you eat or how much you drink… or even how you think.

How about what time you get up in the morning, or what time you go to bed? How about reading for 10 minutes each morning to get your mind focused?

It could be your relationship with your loved ones, or even how you treat the people at the office.

These are all habits, and YOU can change your habits by looking at what you really want to accomplish in your life and your business, and making changes in your patterns of behavior. Right now is a great time to start.

Great job today.

Let’s make it a productive week!

The Hustle Factor

Hi, it’s Dan Lier, America’s Coach, and today’s success track is about Hustle. Most people associate the word hustle in regards to an athlete or sporting event, yet hustle, or lack of hustle will affect your results as well, in business and in life.

Hustle is not one of those cliche words or phrases, such as emotional intelligence or behavior adaptability…It’s simply a blue-collar “state of being” that all of us can use as the winning edge for success.

In business and in life, hustle is about giving it your all… going at it like it’s your last chance, because that’s where you can rise above the rest of the crowd and create superior results

I’m a big believer in hustle, as it’s one of the characteristics that has allowed me to achieve the things that I’ve achieved. It’s not the fancy degrees or the nice outfits that gives people the edge, it’s what I call the Hustle Factor. And here’s what’s great about it… you can out-hustle most people and create the results you want in your business and your life. I’m going to repeat that: You can out-hustle most people, and create the results you want in your business and your life.

It’s More Than Talent…

When I’m looking for people to add to my sales team, sure I’m looking for talent, who wouldn’t… yet there are a lot of people with talent that just operate at a level that just good enough to get the job done. I want the person who has the talent, and is playing like there is no tomorrow. Those are the people who make it happen.

In my travels, speaking and training companies all over the world, I’ve seen people who out-hustle their competition time after time – and they know it. They know that if they are going into the proposal and all things are fairly equal, they know they will get the business because they will do the little things that others just won’t do…. The follow-up, the thank you note, the e-mail, the testimonials, the extra visit… whatever it takes to get the business.

Years ago I was having a conversation with Jerry West, the legendary and Hall of Fame NBA guard for the Lakers. At that time Jerry was the GM for the Lakers. We were talking about Kobe coming into the league, and how although Joe Smith from Ohio State was the first pick the year before Kobe, he knew that Kobe was going to be a superstar. He said to me, he said, “Dan, Kobe plays with a passion for winning… he flat out hustles…. And the line that really stuck with me was this… Jerry said, now here me clearly on this… “hustle alone won’t make you successful, yet without it, you have no chance.” That really hit me… he said without hustle, you have no chance to be the best.

The great news from my perspective is that Hustle is something that you do today. Not tomorrow… Today. You don’t have to pass an exam, get a specialized degree or have so many years in service… you just do it. You just do it.

So what is your hustle Factor on a 0-10 scale… 10 being the best? So, if you’re working on a project or a new account right now, turn up the heat and increase your hustle factor. Turn it up! With a bit of hustle, you can get the winning edge in your business and your life.

Make a decision today to “out-hustle” your competition starting today.

3 Keys to Leadership

It’s Your CHOICE!

Hi I’m Dan Lier, America’s Coach and today’s success track is about the power of choice and how you can start today and choose the direction of your life and your business.

One of the most impactful principals that I share in my talks is the understanding that what you do and how you respond each and every day is up to you.  It’s a choice.  A choice is something that you CHOOSE to do.  Now I’ll agree with anyone that says circumstances happen and sometimes you run into a series of seemingly “tough breaks”… yet no matter what the situation, all of us have the choice on how to respond, and that’s one of the intangibles that creates success.

Think about it this way; if you and your significant other went out to dinner at one of your favorite restaurants and when you walked in, they let you choose which table you wanted to sit at, I bet you’d feel pretty good about that.  What’s interesting, is that we get to choose most things in our life; where we live, what we wear, what we eat, what movie we see, what color of car we drive… it’s a choice.

Here’s what I want you to understand about the power of choice.  We all know we cannot control the circumstances and events that happen to us, yet how we respond to what happens is YOUR choice, and HOW you choose to respond will affect the direction of your life.

Two people lose their jobs because of company downsizing, One of those people plays victim and talks about how life isn’t fair, and asks why things like that happen to me, while the other chooses to increase their skills, diversify their talents and use this as an opportunity for a new start.  The victim chooses one path and the winner chooses another, and their lives will be impacted as they continue to make choices.

So my message to you today is that success is a choice.  We make the decision to be successful or not.  Success is not a secret, it’s not a mystery, it’s a choice.  We choose what we put into our bodies; we choose how we treat people.  We choose if we listen to success talks instead of the radio, we choose what we watch on TV, we choose how much we prepare for our job or career and we choose how we respond to every situation.

Make a decision today to create new success habits.  If you need some help, take a look at Napoleon Hill’s book, the Laws of Success, and you’ll find many principles that you can choose to apply to your life starting today.

Great job… I’m Dan Lier America’s Coach and you can make it happen.
