Quick Communication Strategy for Leaders

Dan Lier

It’s typical for my coaching clients to “bounce” ideas off of me before going into a key meeting with an employee, manager or even a company meeting. My client will share with me what they had planned on saying, and then ask me… “So what do you think?”

More often than not, I answer with the question:  “What’s your outcome?”

The reason this question is so important is because your outcome determines:

  1. How you “frame” the conversation
  2. The choice of words that you use
  3. The feeling that you leave them with.

If you’re meeting with a manager or employee that is underachieving, yet you believe in them and want them to know you are concerned about them and give them a boost, or you are meeting with an employee or manager you are about to put on notice, your approach and how you address the situation is VERY different.

Remember, as leaders our job is to bring the best out of every player.  It’s not an easy job… so whenever going into a meeting, as a leader it will serve you well to always know your outcome.
