This Month’s Success track is about creating impact in your business and your life by getting “ON THE COURT” rather than being “in the bleachers.”
If you’re not a sports fan, bear with me here, as this message is not about sports. I’m simply utilizing sports as a metaphor for our business and our life.
Because I live here in Las Vegas, let’s say you and I walked into a UNLV Rebel basketball game at the Thomas and Mack Center. What would we hear?
We would hear the crowd, the band, the shoes squeaking and the oohs and aahs following a good or bad play.
To our left is a guy that’s yelling at the referee (C’mon blow your whistle; That’s a terrible call, etc), and he’s also yelling at the players (C’mon, shoot the ball; Get Your Head in the game, etc). My question is this; does the guy’s talking up “in the bleachers” impact the game? Of course not. Contrary to what he thinks, no one cares about his comments, nor to they impact the game at all. He has no impact on the outcome basketball game.
Now here’s my question: If we were to go down and sit on the floor seats, what would we hear down there?
We would hear more of the same; the squeaking of the shoes, the whistle of the referee, the band, and of course we would hear talking on the court. The players are talking to other players. The coaches are talking to players; and the coaches are talking to the referees.
Here’s the difference; the talking on the court by those participating in the game CAN actually impact the game. A coach talking to the referee, a coach talking to his players or a player talking to another player can have an effect on the outcome of the game.
The distinction that I want to bring to your attention is that we all know someone who is talking about how things should change at work, in their office, at home or even in their relationship, yet they are metaphorically “sitting in the bleachers” having no impact on the situation. They have no impact on outcome of their own game.
If you want to make changes, in your business or your life, you must get out of the bleachers and “get on the court!”
Many people are in the bleachers in their business or their life, wishing things would turn around or improve, and yet they are like they guy at the basketball game yelling at the players or the referee. They have no impact on the game.
The other distinction is that the guy in the bleachers has no risk. He has nothing at stake or nothing on the Line. It’s all talk. It’s easy to yell from the bleachers and not be accountable or have to make changes or improvements. Yet the players, coaches and referees on the court are at risk. They have something on the line, because in the game you can be a winner or a loser, the hero or the goat. The same goes for you and me. When we get “on the court” and play, meaning get “on the court” in our business, our life, as a parent or in our relationships, that’s when we can have an impact.
Here’s the good news. You can change it today. We can make a decision right now to get down out of the bleachers and get onto the court and actually impact our results.
So make the decision today, to get out of the bleachers and get down on the court and have an impact on the game.
